Entacom 200mg (Entacapone)
Product Description
Extending the Effectiveness of Parkinson’s Therapy
Living with Parkinson’s disease often involves managing the “wearing-off” phenomenon, where the effects of your primary medication wear off before the next dose is due, leading to a return of stiffness and tremors. Entacom 200mg is a prescription medication designed specifically as an add-on therapy to help smooth out these fluctuations and extend the relief provided by your main treatment.
At the heart of Entacom 200mg is the active ingredient Entacapone, which belongs to a class of drugs known as COMT inhibitors. In simple terms, it works by protecting Levodopa (the gold-standard Parkinson’s drug) from breaking down in the bloodstream before it reaches the brain. By blocking the enzyme COMT, Entacom allows more Levodopa to enter the brain, where it is converted into dopamine—the chemical needed to control movement.
Important Note: Entacom 200mg is never used alone. It has no effect on its own and must always be taken simultaneously with a Levodopa/Carbidopa medication. Its role is to make each dose of Levodopa last longer, thereby reducing “off” time (periods of stiffness/slowness) and increasing “on” time (periods of good movement control).
Key Benefits:
-
Extends “On” Time: Proactively helps the primary medication work longer, reducing the gap between doses.
-
Reduces “Wearing-Off”: Minimizes the sudden return of symptoms like tremors and rigidity during the day.
-
Enhances Dopamine Availability: Ensures more of the active medicine reaches the brain to support motor function.
Precautions
Is Entacom 200mg Right for You?
Before starting this medication, transparency with your healthcare provider is essential. Entacapone changes the way your body processes other drugs and has specific side effects.
Please inform your doctor if the patient:
-
Has Liver Disease: The liver is responsible for eliminating this drug. Patients with liver impairment typically should not take Entacom.
-
Is taking MAO inhibitors: Certain antidepressants (like Isocarboxazid or Phenelzine) cannot be taken with Entacom due to dangerous drug interactions.
-
Experiences Impulse Control Disorders: Rarely, medications that boost dopamine can lead to intense urges to gamble, spend money, or eat compulsively.
-
Has a history of Diarrhea: Entacom can sometimes cause severe or persistent diarrhea, which may lead to weight loss.
-
Is Pregnant or Breastfeeding: Usage should be discussed carefully with a doctor to weigh benefits against potential risks.
Side Effects
Understanding Potential Reactions
Like all medications, Entacom 200mg may cause side effects. Some are harmless but surprising, while others require adjustment of your other medications.
Common Side Effects include:
-
Urine Discoloration: This is a very common and harmless side effect where urine turns reddish-brown or orange. Do not be alarmed; it is due to the drug passing through the body.
-
Dyskinesia: Uncontrolled, jerky movements. Because Entacom makes Levodopa stronger, you may get too much dopamine effect. Your doctor may need to lower your Levodopa dose to fix this.
-
Nausea or Vomiting.
-
Diarrhea.
-
Dizziness or drowsiness.
Serious Side Effects (Seek medical attention immediately):
-
Severe or persistent diarrhea: This can occur weeks or months after starting and may indicate inflammation of the colon.
-
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome-like symptoms: High fever, stiff muscles, and confusion (usually associated with sudden withdrawal of the drug).
-
Unexplained muscle pain: Signs of muscle breakdown (Rhabdomyolysis).
-
Mental changes: Hallucinations or severe confusion.
Note: This is not an exhaustive list. If you notice any unusual symptoms, consult your healthcare provider promptly.
How to Use
Guidelines for Effectiveness
To get the most benefit from Entacom 200mg, it must be synchronized perfectly with your other medication.
-
Dosage: Take one 200mg tablet simultaneously with each dose of your Levodopa/Carbidopa medication.
-
Timing: It is taken multiple times a day, exactly when you take your main Parkinson’s pills. If you do not take the Levodopa, do not take the Entacom.
-
Administration: Swallow the tablet whole with water. It can be taken with or without food.
-
If You Miss a Dose: If you forget to take your Entacom dose with your Levodopa, skip the missed tablet. Do not take it separately later. Wait until your next scheduled dose of Levodopa and take them together as usual.
-
Storage: Keep the medication in a cool, dry place (below 30°C), away from direct sunlight and moisture, and out of reach of children.
